Unemployment Benefit Capitalisation
Taking your unemployment benefit as a lump sum to start out
Capitalising your unemployment benefit, the so-called single payment, lets you draw what is left of your entitlement in one go in order to register as self-employed, put capital into a company or join a cooperative as a working member. We check whether you meet the requirements and handle the whole application.
We will tell you whether you qualify before you take any step
-
01
We check the requirements first
applying late forfeits the entitlement altogether.
-
02
We work out how much can be drawn in one payment and how much stays as a contributions subsidy.
-
03
We prepare the business plan and the rest of the paperwork the SEPE asks for.
-
04
We coordinate the self-employed registration or the incorporation with the application itself.

The whole process can be handled remotely from anywhere in Spain.
What capitalisation is
It is a measure run by the SEPE, the Spanish public employment service, to encourage self-employment: instead of drawing the benefit month by month, you receive it as a single payment earmarked for funding the new activity. It can be used to register as a self-employed worker, to contribute share capital to a company, or to join a cooperative or employee-owned company as a working member.
The requirements
You must be drawing contributory unemployment benefit with a minimum number of months still outstanding, not have received another single payment in the preceding years, start the activity after applying, and not have previously combined the benefit with self-employed work.
The exact amounts and deadlines change with the legislation, so we verify them against your own file before filing anything.
The mistake we see most often
Applying for capitalisation after having already registered. The order matters: the application has to come before the activity starts. When someone arrives with the registration already done, in most cases there is nothing left to be done.
That is why the first conversation always comes before anything is set in motion.
What happens afterwards
Once granted, the use of the funds has to be justified and the activity kept going. We carry on with the tax, accounting and payroll side of the business, so that the start-up and the day-to-day are handled by the same team.
